Soundtrack Reviews

Uploaded are another set of soundtrack reviews:

From Monstrous Movie Music comes Ernest Gold’s Ship of Fools [M] (1965), a more unusual work featuring score and original source cues for Stanley Kramer’s drama.

La-La Land’s offerings include Shane [M] (1953), featuring a sold offering of Victor Young’s dramatic score; J.S. Zamecnik’s score for Wings [M] (1927), newly restored for Paramount’s anniversary Blu-ray & DVD; and Dimitri Tiomkin’s The Fall of the Roman Empire [M] (1964), featuring more music than the older Cloud Nine CD.

I’ve also added Franz Waxman’s Crime in the Streets [M] (1956), originally released by Decca, reissued by Entr’acte, and finally reissued on CD by Varese Sarabande’s CD Club a few years ago. It’s one of the best fusions of orchestra & jazz from the fifties by a composer not rooted in jazz, but blessed with excellent instincts for improv. It’s a really beautiful work that’s lost none of its luster.

Because some of the aforementioned soundtrack reviews mandated links to older CDs, I’ve added Jerry Goldsmith’s Boys from Brazil (1978) and Miklos Rozsa’s El Cid (1961), + prior DVD reviews of Samuel Bronston’s Roman Empire and El Cid to the mobile site.

Coming right up: review of Twilight Time’s Enemy Mine Blu-ray, and film + soundtrack reviews of Puppet on a Chain, the underrated 1971 spy thriller which recently screened at the TIFF Bell Lightbox, and is available on video via Scorpion Releasing.
